Congress The Band Manchester Concert reviews
Night of exceeded expectations
After the opening acts, Janelle Monae and Bilal, both more than competent warm up acts, departed the stage, that left the crowd ready for the main course. Ms. Badu hit the stage at approximately 10 pm, welcomed by the near sell out at the Tower Theatre. A DJ opened the Congress The Band portion of the evening, playing old school rap, getting the audience more than in the mood for the main course. Her much anticipated arrival was in a Black top hat with her ever-present locks tucked under it and with Linen colored printed rap on she began the journey thru both new and old material. Badu's command of the band, the groove, and the show is an impressive showing for an Artist who needs to tour much more often. The band backing her was red hot as they moved through the show with confidence as Badu; in the "band leader" mode direct both the band and video clips that played, from center stage, in the aura of a muted spot light. The Tower Theater was especially well served as her music filled the venue and left we close enough to the star to feel the heat and vibe of the show. Unfortunately, most of the Audience missed the encore when she dragged ?uestlove and James Poyser from the Roots on stage to finish as icing to a very satisfied production.
